Fiction Book of the Month for April

Thus Bad Begins
Javier Marias

A new novel from Marias is always an event and this is no exception.  Marias’ prose is stylish and enigmatic and yet the world he creates is entirely believable.  Set in Spain just post the death of Franco. it tells the story of the young Juan De Vere who works for film director Eduardo Muriel.  As his employee Juan is granted a glimpse of Muriel’s dysfunctional marriage to Biatriz, his treatment of whom is cold and emotionally abusive.  The slow reveal of the explanation for Muriel’s behavior is steeped in Spain’s recent troubled political past.
